Product carbon footprint for furnace carbon black operations

Furnace CB accounts for 95% of volumes produced by ICBA members and is the primary processing technology in the market. Releasing the ICBA average *cradle-to-gate* PCF for furnace CB supports downstream industries in achieving sustainability, decarbonization, and eco-design goals. This aims to provide a reliable, science-based reference for PCF calculations, promoting consistent and transparent sustainability reporting across the value chain.

Next steps: develop product category rules (PCR) used to manufacture furnace carbon black

Since the assumptions and system boundaries made during Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) modeling can significantly influence the final results and conclusions, ICBA is working on joint development of a Product Category Rule (PCR) to standardize the methodology and be agnostic of the process technology used to manufacture carbon black (CB). This effort is intended to enable credible and comparable disclosure of product-level LCA data across the industry, related to PCF. Stay tuned for more!
